One thing to be clear about: this page plays two files separated in advance. karanow does it live, on your Mac. Credits
What it does
Apple Music, Spotify, a browser tab, a video. The lead vocal comes out on your Mac about two seconds in, and the band keeps going.
Read from the original singing on the exact recording you put on — not a score out of a hundred. Still in beta.
Your microphone draws your pitch over those notes. Record the take and the file lines up with the song.
In practice
An old one, a deep cut, a B-side from a band with four listeners. A karaoke app gave up on it because catalogues get licensed one song at a time. Whatever you can play, you can sing to.
Put the original on and practise against it. Nothing to find first, nothing to import, nothing to wait for.
The notes are read off the original singing in that recording. Yours draws on top of them, so being under the note looks like being under the note.
Auto mode takes over an iPhone next to you and uses it as the microphone. Nothing to install on the phone. Walk away and it hands back to the Mac, and says so.
